About the Kowalski Workshop Violin
Once you get above the $3,000 price range, there are so many variables in what violins sound better than others. What I have found is that instruments made in parts of Poland are excellent for the price - this Kowalski violin being one of the best that I have played under the $10,000 price range.
I have sold genuine Kowalski violins to students but I find that his workshop model is very similar in sound - and a lot less expensive (genuine Kowalskis retail for $10k+). That is why I'm promoting his workshop violin through my website.
A workshop violin means that the violin was produced not by the master maker but by one of his associated luthiers. What is unique about these workshop violins is that Kowalski himself works closely with all his associates - thus the sound, look and quality of these violins are very similar to his genuinely made instruments (for a lot less price).
The violins look almost identical, are both hand-crafted and use the similar varnish which really helps with the sound quality.
In the video above I’m playing on a genuine Kowalski. The sound quality of the workshop violin is very similar. The sound is very rich, warm and exceptional powerful. It is an excellent violin for the price range and a huge upgrade to my Damiano violin regarding sound warmth and overall sound across the register.
You could compare this violin to many violins made in Italy and Germany priced over $10k and most times this violin would beat out the sound of the other European violins – it really is that great of a sound.
Comparison Between Lacek, Kowalski and Topa Violins
The Kowalski violin comes with Evah Pirazzi strings installed. It includes my Core Oblong Wood case ($195 value).
Where is This Violin Made?
The finest quality violins I’ve found under $3,000 are made in China, while over this price range, I’ve found Polish violins to have the best value. I encourage you to check out the article below I wrote on violinist.com about this subject:
How to Find Violins for Sale – Chinese vs. European
I know some people are weary of buying a violin from China, or think the quality isn’t potentially as good. The truth is many violins from China are awesome but you have to find the right source and process.
The reason why my Chinese violins are so good is that I work with a professional player here in the United States who goes to China directly and picks only the best violins to sell wholesale. He is an extremely picky guy when it comes to sound, and then further I only choose the best sounding violins from his batch of inventory.
I always encourage my 30-day trial period so you can see for yourself the quality of these violins. Nine times out of ten even when students are comparing this violin to competitors they choose this violin based on the sound quality.
Since that is what I'm all about - helping students find the best quality sounding violins, I'm happy that my source from China is one of the best you'll find anywhere online.
